Canes break for many reasons;

Canes break for many reasons. Most break due to drying out, so canes in dry climates will become brittle and break more often then those in more humid climates. A simple solution is to lean them in the corner of your bathroom during a steamy shower once a month to allow them to re-moisturize themselves.

The next most likely cause of premature cane failure is to sharply bend a cane over a small area. Take a cane with both hands far apart and flex the cane slightly. You should see a circular curve. When you put your hands closer together, the bend is still “circular” but becomes smaller and sharper, and at some point the cane will break.

Smacking a cane on the hard flat of a table or over the back of a chair is certain to snap off the end of the cane at the point of contact.

Yes, we all love that “whooshing” sound a cane makes when it flies through the air, however. The waving of a cane back and forth vigorously, without hitting anything, stresses canes at the handle end. This is where the cane will break eventually with this practice.

Canes also just break from wear and tear. Having a cane break from over-usage is a good thing, and it is why I keep the cost affordable. Buy extra canes and you will never be in short supply.
